Cookie Happened – Neon Green Vinyl

With the LP “Cookie Happened Neon Green Vinyl Edition,” released on the Play It Again label, Eels presents the next level of its creativity while largely staying true to its established style. On this record, Mark Oliver Everett’s project-wide songwriting once again appears in its familiar blend of melancholic melodicism and deadpan wit; the compositions often build on simple, catchy motifs framed by sparse arrangements. A hallmark of Eels is the closeness to the voice as narrator, which forms a strong emotional axis even with stripped-back accompaniment, while subtle electronic touches, acoustic guitars, and occasional swells of strings provide dynamics.

Lyrically, the material moves between personal reflections and observational impressions, with moods shifting between irony and introspection. Musically, the band remains anchored in the broad territory between indie rock, singer-songwriter tradition, and hints of art-pop, with melodic clarity and a penchant for intimacy shaping the production. The LP thus fits neatly into the Eels body of work and once again documents the project’s ability to reorder familiar elements and, through nuanced arrangements, create a distinct atmosphere that offers listeners both a sense of familiarity and room for attentive discovery.
